Horizontal accuracy depends upon the spacing of the elevation matrix. For 7.5 minute DEMs the resolution is 30 meters which reduces the ability to recover positions of features less than this spacing. The USGS has stated that this dataset will maintain integrity and support a resampling to 10-meter resolution. Original contour intervals may vary according to the quadrangle as well as spatial resolution, quality of source data, collection and processing procedures and digitizing systems. A vertical RMSE of 7 meters was the target with 15 meters as the maximum permitted.
